The Congress on Thursday expressed heartfelt condolences over the demise of CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury. Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, described him as a protector of the idea of India, with a profound understanding of the country.
Yechury, 72, passed away at AIIMS after a prolonged illness. He had been in critical condition for several days, relying on respiratory support.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge lauded Yechury as an excellent parliamentarian and an intellectual who balanced pragmatism with idealism. 'My heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Comrade Sitaram Yechury ji. He was a humble leader who balanced personal relationships with unwavering political ideologies,' Kharge said on X.
Sonia Gandhi, chair of the Congress Parliamentary Party, noted his fierce determination to protect India's diversity and secularism. 'His commitment to the values of our Constitution was uncompromising,' she added.
