The Jammu and Kashmir unit of BJP expelled a party leader, Shiv Dev Singh, on Monday for contesting as an independent against the party’s official candidate in the Jammu north assembly segment.

The decision was made by working president Satpal Sharma and General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Kaul after a recommendation from a disciplinary committee led by Sunil Sethi, according to an official statement from BJP.

Singh, who defected to BJP from Congress in May 2022, is among 17 candidates vying for the seat. The key race will likely be between BJP's Sham Lal Sharma and National Conference's Ajay Kumar Sadhotra.
