Pro-tem speaker Mubarak Gul announced on Monday that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has vacated the Budgam assembly seat to retain his position in the Ganderbal constituency.
Abdullah has a deep-rooted connection with Ganderbal, having previously served as an MLA from this area during his first tenure as chief minister from 2009 to 2014. Known as a stronghold for the Abdullah family, Ganderbal carries strategic political importance.
As a result of this decision, the National Conference's strength in the 95-member house has been lowered to 41. Nevertheless, the party maintains a comfortable majority, ensuring stability with support from six Congress MLAs, five Independents, and one MLA each from the AAP and the CPI(M).
