Ilir Meta, the leader of Albania's left-wing Freedom Party and a former president, was taken into custody by the National Investigation Bureau in Tirana on Monday over money laundering allegations.
Local media outlets reported the incident, while the prosecutor's office has yet to make an official comment.
Meta, aged 55, is under investigation for past allegations of illegal lobbying in the United States. His political career in post-communist Albania includes terms as prime minister and foreign minister.
