Trump Calls for Russia's Return to G7
U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his desire for Russia to rejoin the Group of Seven nations, arguing it was a mistake to exclude Moscow. Russia was expelled from the G8 in 2014 after annexing Crimea. Trump's remarks come amid new U.S. reciprocal tariffs and evoke mixed global reactions.
U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that Russia be reinstated into the Group of Seven (G7) nations, asserting that expelling Moscow was a misjudgment. Trump's comments were made during a White House announcement of new U.S. reciprocal tariffs.
Russia had been a part of the G8, the club of industrialized democracies, until 2014 when it was excluded due to its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region. 'I'd love to have them back. I think it was a mistake to throw them out,' stated Trump, highlighting his belief that Russia should be involved in discussions.
Despite Trump's remarks, there has been no immediate response from Canada, the current chair of the G7. The proposal adds layers of complexity to international diplomatic discussions, as Russia's previous expulsion remains a contentious issue among member countries.
