The Centre's conditional loan of Rs 529.50 crore for Wayanad rehabilitation has ignited a political firestorm in Kerala. Both the ruling Left and the opposition UDF are criticizing the stipulations, while the BJP insists that the interest-free loan, in essence, functions as a grant.

Kerala Revenue Minister K Rajan labeled the loan conditions as 'scary' and 'a cruel joke.' Opposition Leader V D Satheesan called the March 31 utilization deadline 'impractical,' echoing discontent within the state assembly. Meanwhile, BJP state president K Surendran criticized the Kerala government and UDF for their approach, suggesting that political maneuvering should end and the focus should shift to utilizing the funds.

As frustrations brew, some victims in Wayanad expressed disappointment, feeling tossed between the Centre and state governments. Protests loom as the Centre's stipulations remain stringent, requiring prompt fund utilization and strict project adherence under the Special Assistance Scheme for 2024-25. Over 200 lives were lost in landslides that hit Wayanad last July, urging swift action for rehabilitation.
