The long-standing delay in the presentation of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report sparked intense debate in the Delhi Assembly. On Tuesday, Speaker Vijender Gupta expressed deep concerns, referring to the strong remarks made by the High Court about the matter. "It is astonishing that the CAG report has not been tabled since the 2017-18 period. As then Leader of Opposition, I, along with five others, urged the relevant authorities, including the President and Chief Secretary, to formally present the report. Understanding the state's financial condition hinges on this report, yet it remains untabled, raising constitutional concerns," Gupta remarked.
Issuing further critique, Gupta highlighted the High Court's severe observations on the handling of the CAG report. "The delay was negligent and deliberate. Proper protocol was ignored by not presenting it to the Lieutenant Governor on time," he added. His comments ignited a storm in the assembly with the BJP attributing financial mismanagement allegations to the AAP government.
Amidst rising tensions, Speaker Gupta suspended 12 AAP MLAs, including Opposition Leader Atishi and MLA Gopal Rai, after slogans disrupted the Lieutenant Governor's address. Earlier, BJP leader Parvesh Verma claimed the awaited CAG report would expose significant corruption under AAP's governance, reflecting misuse of the budget and exploitation of taxpayers. The BJP's newest government under CM Rekha Gupta plans to showcase 14 CAG reports, expected to reveal financial discrepancies from the AAP's time in power.
