Duterte Faces Potential ICC Arrest with Defiance

Former Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte expressed readiness for possible arrest by the ICC over his controversial 'war on drugs' campaign. Despite facing potential charges, Duterte justified his actions at a rally in Hong Kong, emphasizing his dedication to peace in the Philippines.

Rodrigo Duterte, the former president of the Philippines, stated in Hong Kong that he was prepared to be arrested, following reports of a possible ICC warrant concerning his intense 'war on drugs.' This campaign, marked by thousands of deaths, was a central element of Duterte's rise to power in 2016.

While no official communication from Interpol has yet been received, the office of current President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed readiness to comply with legal demands if an arrest warrant is presented. "Our law enforcers are ready to follow what law dictates," stated Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro.

Duterte was in Hong Kong to rally support for his senatorial candidates in upcoming elections, addressing thousands and reiterating his actions were for the nation's benefit, despite potential arrests. The Philippines has signaled a limited cooperation with ICC investigators despite previously withdrawing from its treaty in 2019.
