Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya recently recounted his harrowing experiences during the Emergency in India, describing it as a 'dark period' in the nation's post-Independence history.
As the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Emergency's imposition approaches, Dattatreya shared memories of evading arrest and ultimately facing imprisonment as a functionary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He recalled receiving directives to avoid detention when numerous activists were apprehended, leading him underground with an altered appearance. His mission involved organizing anti-Emergency activities and ensuring activist safety.
Despite challenges, including an injury during a covert meeting and the loss of his brother, Dattatreya remained unwavering in his commitment, inspired by his mother’s support. Arrested under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act, he stayed resolute, rejecting deals for his release.
