In a sharp rebuke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticized the administration following US President Donald Trump's declaration of a 25% tariff and additional penalties on India. According to Tagore, this move highlights failures in India's foreign policy.

Addressing ANI, Tagore noted that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had forewarned about similar outcomes due to missteps in diplomatic strategies. Congressman Jairam Ramesh also echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that past overtures between Modi and Trump had achieved little in terms of long-term gains for India.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump cited India's high tariffs and significant military and energy purchases from Russia as reasons for the penalties, effective from August 1st. He expressed concerns over India's trade barriers and its ties with Russia amidst the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
