Bolsonaro Under House Arrest Amid Alleged Coup Plot
Brazil's Supreme Court placed former President Jair Bolsonaro under house arrest, citing his involvement in an alleged coup plot. Bolsonaro is accused of trying to overturn his 2022 electoral defeat. The arrest follows increasing tensions between Brazil and the U.S., with Trump imposing tariffs in Bolsonaro's defense.
Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro, charging him with plotting a violent coup to reverse his 2022 electoral defeat. The court remains steadfast despite escalating tensions with the United States and sanctions from President Donald Trump.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes, sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury, issued the arrest order following Bolsonaro's alleged attempts to involve Trump in his defense. The decision restricts Bolsonaro's communications and visitations.
Bolsonaro, who views the court actions as tyranny, has seen his supporter base energized, despite mounting legal challenges and a ban on running for public office until 2030.
