In a significant political development, former Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh has been elected as the president of a breakaway faction of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) during a delegate session in Amritsar.
The faction, which claims legitimacy over the Sukhbir Singh Badal-led SAD, held the election at Gurdwara Burj Akali Phoola Singh with more than 500 delegates participating. In addition to Singh's election, Satwant Kaur was named the chairperson of the faction's 'Panthic' council.
Giani Harpreet Singh and Satwant Kaur have promised to revive the party's original mandates and plan to register with the Election Commission if necessary. Their faction accuses the Badal-led group of defying Akal Takht directives, aiming for transparency and grassroots support.
