CPI(M) MLA Kanathil Jameela, representing Koilandy constituency, passed away at the age of 59 on Saturday after a battle with cancer. She had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode, where she died around 8.45 pm, according to party leaders.
Before being elected as an MLA in 2021, Jameela had a notable career in public service. She served as the president of the Kozhikode District Panchayat and was actively involved in the Communist movement from a young age. Born in Kuttiyadi, Kozhikode, to T K Ali and T K Mariam, she was married to Abdul Rahman and is survived by a son and a daughter.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan praised Jameela for her administrative abilities and her simple, humane approach. Tributes from across the political spectrum highlighted her commitment to social and women's issues, marking her as a strong representative of the Left Front and a dedicated public worker.
