Donations for a Babri Masjid-style mosque in West Bengal's Murshidabad have surpassed Rs 1.30 crore due to intense local and online contributions. In West Bengal's Murshidabad district, donation boxes for a proposed Babri Masjid-style mosque, established by the suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, are filling up rapidly. Cash-counting machines are operating continuously as contributions pour in both physically and online, highlighting strong public support.
So far, at least Rs 37.33 lakh in cash has been counted from donation boxes, and online contributions via QR codes have amounted to Rs 93 lakh. This takes the total collection past Rs 1.30 crore, with seven more sealed boxes awaiting tabulation, according to Kabir's associates.
This fundraising occurs amid a politically charged environment, as Kabir aims to construct the mosque on the anniversary of the Babri Masjid's demolition. This has intensified tensions in the poll-bound state, with Kabir—a political figure known for his theatrics and past suspensions—recently announcing the formation of a new political party ahead of the elections.
