Kuki outfits have voiced strong opposition to BJP MLA Yumnam Khemchand Singh's visit to a relief camp in Manipur's Ukhrul district, dismissing it as a political maneuver rather than an act of empathy.
Singh's visit marked the first time a leader from the Meitei community ventured into Kuki-dominated areas since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023. Despite the visit's symbolic significance, the Kuki Inpi Ukhrul and Kuki-Zo Council rejected Singh's actions as disrespectful and unauthorized, with some labeling it as an irresponsible publicity stunt.
The Kuki-Zo Council further criticized Singh for failing to address the violence when tensions were highest. Over 260 people have been killed, and many remain displaced as the state grapples with deep ethnic divides and political turmoil following the resignation of the chief minister in February.
