In a move signaling heightened tensions, Iran has extended an order closing its airspace to commercial flights early Thursday without public explanation. This decision comes amid growing frictions with the United States over Iran's intense crackdown on widespread protests.
The Iranian government has not provided a reason for the airspace closure, initially set for just over two hours but now prolonged until 7:30 a.m. local time. Meanwhile, Iranian officials indicated that swift trials and possible executions could be in store for those arrested during the ongoing demonstrations.
A US military base in Qatar has advised certain personnel to evacuate as fears of military intervention linger. Despite this uncertainty, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for diplomatic solutions, in stark contrast to the country's tough judiciary stance. Reports from the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency estimate over 2,615 protesters have been killed, marking the deadliest crackdown since Iran's 1979 Revolution.
