Trump's Immigration Crackdown: Halting Visa Processing for 75 Nations
U.S. President Donald Trump

The Trump administration has announced a suspension on processing immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries, signaling a significant intensification of its immigration crackdown. This drastic step, set to begin on January 21, aims to tighten screening and vetting procedures, according to a State Department spokesperson.

The affected countries span Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Balkans, raising concerns about impacts on genuine visa seekers. The move excludes visitor visas, which remain unaffected as the U.S. prepares to host major international events in 2026 and 2028.

Tommy Pigott, Principal Deputy Spokesperson at the State Department, stated the suspension aims to prevent potential immigrants from becoming public charges. Critics, however, argue the policy could bar nearly half of all legal immigrants, imposing a significant brake on legal immigration activities.
