Awami League leader Sajeeb Wazed Joy criticized the February 12 parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, labeling them a 'selection' rather than a genuine election. Speaking at a book discussion held by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, he warned that the elections appeared predetermined in favor of a coalition dominated by Jamaat-e-Islami if BNP emerged as the largest party.
Joy alleged that the likely scenario would see Jamaat calling the shots from behind, resulting in a weak government vulnerable to external influences. He flagged serious security concerns for India due to potential cross-border militancy and an erosion of Bangladesh's secular framework, directly impacting India's eastern security.
Joy also criticized the current governance as an 'unelected regime' installed through unrest. He accused it of releasing convicted militants and suppressing dissent, thus highlighting the challenges in maintaining stability and democratic processes in Bangladesh. The discussion was organized by Khola Hawa, a socio-cultural organization.
