Congress MP Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday called for transparency regarding the details of the India-US trade agreement, highlighting that a joint statement has yet to be released. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a social media post, alleging that India has made concessions on liberalizing agricultural imports.

"It's been 36 hours since President Trump mentioned an immediate announcement of the India-US trade deal at Mr. Modi's request, but no details have emerged. It's clear India made concessions on agricultural imports, yet no joint statement has been issued. It's evident Mr. Modi pushed this announcement for reasons unknown," Ramesh stated. The agreement, which reduces tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, has ignited a political controversy. The government lauds it as transformative, while opposition voices question its transparency and impact on local farmers and industries.

Concerns persist over claims of protecting agriculture and dairy, questioning tariff reductions from 25% to 18%, and unverified suggestions by President Trump that India might eliminate tariffs on certain American goods and make substantial purchases from the US. However, government sources hint that a joint statement on the trade agreement might be released this week.

A government source revealed, "We are finalizing negotiations, and expect to release a joint statement soon." Meanwhile, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal reassured that sensitive sectors like agriculture and dairy are safeguarded in the trade deal. In a press conference, he underscored Prime Minister Modi's dedication to these sectors, emphasizing the plethora of opportunities awaiting Indian industries.
