Jayanta Khaund, ex-leader of the Asom Gana Parishad, officially joined the Congress Party on Monday. The arrangement was solidified at a press conference attended by Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi, AICC general secretary Jitendra Singh, and senior observer D K Shivakumar.

Gogoi expressed that the entry of Khaund is pivotal with the Assam Legislative Assembly elections on the horizon. He believes Khaund's alignment with Congress will bolster their position amid public discontent directed at the state's current government under Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Jitendra Singh applauded Khaund for his commitment to Assamese culture and his steadfastness against the government's perceived undermining of regional parties. Khaund's move to Congress is perceived as a strengthening of party ranks ahead of the elections.
