The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has released its initial slate of candidates for the forthcoming Assam assembly elections, scheduled to occur next month. According to a party circular issued late Monday, AIUDF President Badruddin Ajmal revealed the names of nine candidates, retaining three incumbent MLAs while introducing new contenders.
This list is significant as it represents the first electoral step following the state's 2023 delimitation exercise, which altered constituency boundaries. The AIUDF has chosen Aminul Islam, Hafiz Rafiqul Islam, and Nizanur Rahman to contest in Rupahihat, Mandia, and Gauripur, respectively. Additionally, the party has nominated two new women candidates, Minakshi Rahman and Sabana Akhtar.
Despite initial efforts to join forces with the Congress-led alliance, AIUDF stands independently in this election. The current political landscape shows the ruling BJP maintaining a majority with its allies, while AIUDF and Congress lead the opposition bloc. This election poses a crucial test for AIUDF's strategy and influence in the region.
