Chabahar Port's Future Hangs in Balance Amid Geopolitical Shifts

The Committee on External Affairs, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, notes that an initial allocation of Rs 100 crore for Chabahar's development in 2025-26 was boosted to Rs 400 crore. By January 2026, this budget was fully utilized as part of India's commitment to this pivotal infrastructure. No funds have been allocated for 2026-27 as India fulfilled its financial commitment according to a 2024 contract.

The report also highlights the temporary extension of a US sanctions waiver until April 2026, after discussions with American authorities. Despite these hurdles, the Indian government remains actively engaged with all stakeholders to navigate these challenges, recognizing Chabahar's essential role in regional connectivity and the International North South Transport Corridor.
