In a significant political shift, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) is no longer part of the BJP-led coalition in the state. The Bodoland People's Front (BPF), however, remains a steadfast ally. The development underscores evolving dynamics in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) region, an autonomous area within Assam.
Sarma, speaking to reporters in New Delhi, shared that the finalized seat-sharing plan among BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and BPF will see each party contest specific constituencies, with an announcement expected later. The UPPL will independently field candidates in 15 seats.
The upcoming assembly elections in Assam are set for April 9, with results to be declared on May 4. The BJP-led alliance, which held a solid majority in the outgoing assembly, continues to strategize its electoral positioning. Meanwhile, the opposition, led by Congress, faces its own challenges in the 126-member legislative assembly.
