The Income Tax Department on Friday conducted searches at two locations tied to TMC MLA Debasish Kumar, who is contesting re-election for the Rashbehari seat in South Kolkata, officials confirmed. Searches commenced simultaneously around 6 am at his residence and election office.

The impetus behind the searches remains undisclosed. Recently, Kumar was summoned multiple times by the Enforcement Directorate regarding a land fraud case. His appearances at the CGO Complex in Salt Lake were recorded on April 1, 3, and 9, as investigators sought to verify any financial links between Kumar and businessman Amit Gangopadhyay.

The Rashbehari constituency is set for polling in the second phase of assembly elections on April 29, with results anticipated on May 4. BJP has fielded columnist Swapan Dasgupta as its candidate. The raids have sparked tension, with TMC supporters protesting against the BJP-led government, prompting the deployment of central forces to maintain order.
