West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of misusing government machinery for political campaigning. Speaking at a rally in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district, Banerjee alleged Modi's recent address to the nation was an 'illegal campaign' for the BJP, violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
The controversy surrounds Modi's speech a day after a bill, proposing 33 per cent women's reservation in legislatures from 2029, failed in the Lok Sabha. Banerjee criticized Modi for allegedly linking the women's quota with the delimitation bill and questioned the BJP-led government's sincerity in implementing the legislation previously passed in September 2023.
Further, Banerjee accused the BJP of failing to uphold their electoral promises, such as job creation and financial benefits. She warned that if the BJP comes to power, welfare measures launched by her government would be at risk. The TMC chief also condemned the BJP for using central agencies to intimidate opposition leaders, asserting she would not be deterred by such tactics.
