A new political storm has hit India as seven members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Rajya Sabha have defected to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
AAP MP Sanjay Singh has formally requested Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan to disqualify these MPs, citing the anti-defection law.
The defecting MPs argued that AAP had strayed from its founding principles, but AAP leaders describe the move as a betrayal of the people's mandate, particularly in Punjab.
