In a dramatic turn of events, Congress legislators staged a walkout from a special one-day session of the Madhya Pradesh assembly. The protest was in response to Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar's refusal to accept their private bill advocating for the immediate implementation of a 33 percent women's reservation.
The session, organized by the BJP-led state government, had a government resolution on women's reservation slated for discussion. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stated that Madhya Pradesh is leading the country by addressing this critical issue in a special session. However, contention arose when Opposition Leader Umang Singhar demanded an immediate discussion on the Women's Reservation Act of 2023.
Tensions escalated as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya insisted that government proposals take precedence. Despite Heated debates, the Speaker ruled to prioritize the government resolution, prompting Congress's walkout. The assembly also paid tributes to the late Asha Bhosle, with members observing a silent tribute before a brief adjournment.
