The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday demanded Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to publicly denounce remarks made by Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar. The legislator allegedly justified a shooting incident at an event attended by former US President Donald Trump in Washington and expressed hope for a similar attack on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Wadettiwar's comments, captured in a video shared by BJP, suggested that actions have consequences, attributing disturbances in global peace to Trump's past international policies. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla accused the Congress of crossing beyond political criticism into endorsing violence, intensifying political tensions in the country.
Poonawalla called out Congress for its repeated use of derogatory language against Prime Minister Modi, labeling it a reflection of a "dangerous and irresponsible mindset." He demanded the Congress apologize for remarks made against BJP and Modi, framing such attitudes as contrary to constitutional respect.
