Azerbaijan Rejects EU's Accusations Amid Rising Tensions
Azerbaijan has summoned the EU's ambassador in response to a European Parliament resolution denouncing the country's detention of Armenian prisoners of war. The resolution demands the immediate release of detainees and underscores EU support for Armenia's rights. Azerbaijan dismissed the resolution, citing biased perceptions and reiterating past conflicts.
Azerbaijan has escalated diplomatic tensions by summoning the European Union's ambassador following a European Parliament resolution that condemns Baku's detention of Armenian prisoners of war. The resolution calls for immediate releases and expresses support for the rights of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has dismissed the resolution as both 'unfounded and biased,' asserting that those described as prisoners of war have committed significant crimes, including war crimes. Controversy stems from Azerbaijan's historical conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, culminating in 2023 when Azerbaijan regained control and ethnic Armenians fled the area.
In a recent development, Azerbaijan's parliament announced it would sever ties with the European Assembly, accusing it of initiating a 'smear campaign.' The assembly is blamed for hindering bilateral relations and encouraging conflict by fueling revanchist forces in the region.
