Over 16 per cent voter turnout was registered in the initial two hours of repolling at specific booths within two assembly constituencies in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, according to officials.
The peaceful voting process took place in 11 polling stations of the Magrahat Paschim assembly constituency and four in Diamond Harbour. The repoll was mandated by the Election Commission following allegations of electoral malpractice. Voting, which started at 7 am, is expected to continue until 6 pm. As reported by polling officials, Magrahat Paschim logged a 16.68 per cent voter turnout, while Diamond Harbour recorded 15.83 per cent.
Nearby, an adequate number of central forces were deployed to ensure a secure environment, coupled with webcasting that monitored the proceedings, according to the election commission. The repolling decision was anchored on reports from returning officers and constituency observers, and weighed on material circumstances, as stated by the commission.
In Magrahat Paschim, voters saw TMC's Md Samim Ahamed Molla against BJP's Goursundar Ghosh, with other challenges from Congress and ISF candidates. Meanwhile, Diamond Harbour contestants include TMC's Panna Lal Halder competing with Dipak Kumar Halder of the BJP, among others.
