The voter turnout during Saturday's repolling in two key constituencies hit a remarkable 86.9% by 5 PM. Diamond Harbour recorded an 87.6% turnout, closely followed by Magrahat Paschim at 86.11%, even as rain drenched the enthusiastic electorate in South 24 Parganas district.
The Election Commission of India's call for repolling at 15 booths stemmed from alleged tampering with electronic voting machines during the second phase of assembly elections on April 29. Joining the voters were heavy security reinforcements, tasked with ensuring an orderly conclusion to the election process under the Commission's watchful eye.
To bolster transparency, the ECI has appointed Additional and Police Observers under Article 324 of the Constitution of India and Section 20B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. These officials are on deputation to oversee secure and intimidation-free proceedings and are coordinating closely with existing election machinery as the vote count approaches.
