Vote counting for the crucial Umreth assembly bypoll in Gujarat's Anand district is scheduled for Monday. This by-election was prompted by the unfortunate passing of BJP MLA Govind Parmar, and was conducted on April 23 with a voter turnout of 59.04% across 306 polling stations.
The contest sees five candidates in the running, but the primary face-off is between BJP’s Harshad Parmar, the late MLA's son, and Congress' Bhrugurajsinh Chauhan. An official confirmed the opening of EVMs and VVPATs would take place Monday morning at a college in Vallabh Vidyanagar, where security measures have been intensified.
This is the first assembly election for both Harshad Parmar and the 62-year-old Chauhan, who has served as Umreth taluka panchayat president and is now Congress' coordinator for the central zone in Gujarat. The election is seen as a continuation of legacy and an entry point for new political ambitions.
