In a striking proposal to advance Turkey's peace process, nationalist party leader Devlet Bahceli has called for the jailed head of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to be given an official role. His remarks were made during a parliamentary speech on Tuesday, following criticism from pro-Kurdish lawmakers regarding the slow pace of government initiatives.
Bahceli, a pivotal ally of President Erdogan, suggested the establishment of a 'Peace Process and Politicisation Coordination Office' where the PKK's founding leader, Abdullah Ocalan, would serve. This proposal comes despite the PKK's classification as a terrorist group by Turkey, the US, and the EU.
The PKK, which initiated its insurgency in 1984, declared a cessation of hostilities last year. While Ankara insists on verified disarmament before proceeding with legal reforms, Kurdish political figures are urging quicker reforms. The enduring conflict has claimed over 40,000 lives, extending its impact to Iraq and Syria.
