The Uttarakhand government is setting up advanced early warning and real-time monitoring systems at sensitive glacial lakes to mitigate outburst flood risks, according to officials. The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) has been tasked with developing Vasundhara Lake as a pilot site for these sophisticated systems.
Chief Secretary Anand Bardhan has instructed WIHG to deliver a detailed timeline for these activities by 2028. Efforts will extend to structural interventions aimed at controlled water drainage and lake level reduction to avert disasters.
The state is also upgrading its earthquake early warning network with the addition of 500 strong-motion sensors and 526 new sirens. Meanwhile, landslide risks are being managed with alert initiatives in sensitive areas.
