Assam's political landscape is set for a shift as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his cabinet have resigned, facilitating the formation of a new BJP-led government. The BJP-NDA coalition secured a majority at the assembly with 102 seats out of 126.

On Wednesday, after the announcement of election results, Sarma tendered his resignation to Governor Laxman Acharya at Lok Bhawan. The Governor has accepted his resignation and asked him to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the formation of the new government. The oath-taking ceremony is expected to occur post-May 11, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit.

The BJP appointed Union Minister J P Nadda as a central observer and Haryana's CM Nayab Singh Saini as co-observer to oversee the process of selecting Assam's new chief minister. The party's legislature will soon nominate their leader, with the final decision expected shortly thereafter.
