Million-Dollar Shift: Wealthy Australians Back Populist Party Over Conservatives
Angus Aitken, a Sydney stockbroker, shifts his political donations from the conservative Liberal Party to the populist One Nation, encouraged by mining magnate Gina Rinehart. With growing support from wealthy donors, One Nation eyes a breakthrough with potential wins in parliament, amid discontented Australian voter sentiments.
In a notable political shift, Sydney stockbroker Angus Aitken, initially a staunch supporter of Australia's conservative Liberal Party, has redirected his financial backing. Just last May, he donated A$230,000 to the party. However, this year, he's committed A$1.1 million to Pauline Hanson's populist One Nation, citing dissatisfaction with the conservative establishment's infighting and poor polling performance.
This move is not isolated. Encouraged by mining billionaire Gina Rinehart, a segment of Australia's elite is pivoting their support toward One Nation. The party, since its 1997 inception, has had a limited parliamentary presence but recently gained momentum by aligning with policies reminiscent of U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, such as mass deportations and deregulation.
A broader global trend sees wealthy individuals in countries like Britain and France backing populist parties as traditional right-wing factions splinter. With looming by-elections, One Nation could claim a notable presence in the House of Representatives, further challenging the established political order. Yet, despite its rising popularity, One Nation's ability to secure major governance remains uncertain, though it may influence key parliamentary decisions.
