EU Dismisses Putin's Proposal for Schroeder as Negotiator
European Union foreign ministers have rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder represent them in talks with Moscow. Schroeder’s credentials were questioned due to his close ties with Putin. EU officials expressed skepticism over Russia's readiness to negotiate meaningfully about Europe's security.
The European Union has firmly rejected an idea proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who suggested that former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder could represent Europe in negotiations with Moscow. During a recent meeting in Brussels, EU foreign ministers expressed skepticism about Russia's willingness to engage in genuine dialogue regarding European security matters.
Commenting on the proposal, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas remarked on Schroeder's potential impartiality, highlighting his previous associations with Russian companies and President Putin. Kallas emphasized that allowing Russia to appoint a representative on behalf of the EU would be unwise, reflecting the general consensus among European leaders.
Echoing similar concerns, German Europe Minister Gunther Krichbaum and other European officials, including Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, dismissed Schroeder's eligibility as an honest broker. Despite limited progress in U.S.-led negotiations, some European authorities are calling on the EU to prepare for direct discussions with Russia, albeit on Europeans' terms and timing.
