Fuel Price Hike Sparks Debate Over VAT Cut in West Bengal

In a scathing critique, Trinamool Congress MP Derek O'Brien targeted the BJP over the recent surge in fuel prices, questioning if the new West Bengal government will cut VAT on petrol and diesel. O'Brien took to social media to lambast both the central and state administrations.

O'Brien accused the BJP of exploiting voters, commenting, "First they loot your vote, then they kick you where it hurts. Predictably pathetic," following a nationwide fuel price increase of Rs 3 per litre. He speculated that a Delhi-influenced West Bengal government might not face the financial obstructions he alleges were previously caused by the Centre.

The price hike comes amidst mounting global energy concerns tied to geopolitical strife in West Asia. The US-Israel and Iran conflict has spurred disruptions in crude oil supply, shooting Brent crude prices beyond USD 100 per barrel. The Indian government, however, insists that domestic fuel reserves are ample, ensuring steady supply amid global turmoil.
