In a serious accusation against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Punjab AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang on Sunday claimed that efforts are underway to manipulate voter rolls in Punjab through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. According to Kang, the BJP aims to unfairly delete bona fide voters under the guise of vote verification.
Kang has called upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) to conduct this exercise transparently to ensure democratic integrity. Highlighting past elections in states like West Bengal, he warned of potential misuse of the SIR exercise, urging collective vigilance from all political factions and the public in Punjab to protect against disenfranchisement.
In a letter addressed to the ECI, Kang voiced concerns about the transparency of the process and its potential impact on genuine voters, especially NRIs. He demanded practical, NRI-friendly mechanisms for verification and stressed the need for maintaining the voting rights of all eligible Punjabis, firmly opposing any attempt to undermine their democratic voice.
