A statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was allegedly vandalised by miscreants in Ambedkar colony on the Garwar-Piyaria road under the Garwar police station area, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday night when some unidentified persons allegedly damaged a finger of the statue's right hand and one of its feet, police said.
Villagers noticed the damaged statue on Wednesday morning and informed the police. A large number of villagers and leaders of several political parties also gathered at the site.
Station House Officer Hitesh Kumar said a new statue has been installed at the spot, and added that personnel have been deployed as a precautionary measure. He, however, said the situation remained peaceful and is under control.
The officer said a case has been registered against unidentified persons under Section 298 (injuring or defiling a place of worship with intent to insult the religion of any class) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita on the complaint of a resident, Bhim Kumar.
Police are taking necessary legal action in the matter, he added.
