Tensions Soar as Russian Drones Hit Foreign Ships in Black Sea
Russian drones attacked three foreign-flagged merchant vessels in Ukraine's maritime export corridor in the Black Sea, causing fires which crews later extinguished. The vessels were flagged by Vanuatu, the Comoros, and Panama. This incident underscores ongoing Russian targeting of crucial maritime trading routes since its invasion of Ukraine.
Russian drones launched attacks on three foreign-flagged merchant ships navigating Ukraine's maritime export corridor in the Black Sea late Thursday into Friday, according to Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba. These aggressive actions accentuate escalating tensions in the region.
The targeted strikes ignited fires aboard the ships, though the crews managed to bring them under control, Kuleba relayed on Telegram. Ukraine’s seaports authority revealed that the affected vessels identified with the flags of Vanuatu, the Comoros, and Panama.
Notably, the Ukrainian navy earlier identified a hit on the Ant, a Turkey-owned cargo vessel under the Vanuatu flag en route to Turkey from a port in Ukraine's Odesa region. The attack prompted a fire and necessitated the evacuation of two injured crew members. Such strikes exemplify Russia’s persistent efforts to disrupt essential maritime trade routes amid its prolonged conflict in Ukraine.
