Can Andy Burnham Revive Labour's Fortunes?

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham is rumored to be planning a bid for British prime minister, with the possibility of a snap general election, according to Labour insiders who spoke to the Sun newspaper.

Burnham is reportedly in discussions with British interior minister Shabana Mahmood, who he intends to appoint as chancellor if his leadership campaign succeeds. Former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is also expected to make a return to the cabinet.

The potential challenge comes after Labour's poor performance in recent local elections under current leader Keir Starmer. Burnham, viewed as a potential savior of the party's fortunes, must first win the Makerfield seat near Manchester to mount a formal challenge.
