In a significant anti-corruption operation, several leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) were arrested across West Bengal. TMC leader Tilak Kumar Chakraborty was taken into custody over his alleged involvement in a job fraud case in Haldia, Purba Medinipur, followed by a mandatory medical assessment at Basulia Rural Hospital.
Additionally, in a separate incident, Kolkata Police apprehended TMC leader Paritosh Dutta in Bardhaman concerning the arms case at Surendranath College. Confirmations came from Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma. Furthermore, Panchayat Officer and TMC leader Rajib Banerjee was detained in Birbhum for allegedly selling rice meant for ration distribution.
These arrests coincide with turmoil within the TMC after their loss of power in West Bengal. Notably, 58 of the party's 80 MLAs have endorsed expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the new Leader of the Opposition, sidelining Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee. Despite the internal rebellion, the dissident faction supports Mamata Banerjee as a chief advisor, whereas the TMC's upper echelon contests the move's validity, citing potential forgery in submitted documents. Legal deliberations are anticipated to address these discrepancies.
