Myanmar's Power Shift: President Min Aung Hlaing Visits China
Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing is visiting China, marking his first trip there since his appointment. Hlaing, formerly the junta chief responsible for the 2021 coup, aims to strengthen ties with China. This visit highlights Myanmar's efforts to rebuild international relationships after years of isolation due to sanctions.
Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived in Beijing on Monday, embarking on a significant five-day visit at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, as reported by China's state media. This marks Hlaing's first trip to China's booming economy since his presidential appointment early this year.
Min Aung Hlaing, known for orchestrating the 2021 coup that plunged Myanmar into civil strife and triggered a slew of international sanctions, was elected president in April by a parliament dominated by military affiliates. His presidency consolidates his authoritative grip following a shift from military leader to civilian head.
During this visit, Hlaing is scheduled to engage in strategic discussions with Xi Jinping and will also meet Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Zhao Leji, head of the legislature. This visit underscores Myanmar's initiative to rekindle international relations post-isolation, previously demonstrates by Hlaing's visit to India aimed at expanding diplomatic horizons.
