Spain's Immigration Windfall: Record Demand for Legal Status

Spain's initiative to grant legal status to undocumented migrants has drawn nearly 900,000 applications, surpassing its initial expectations. This surge occurs as Spain continues to welcome immigrants, integrating them into its labor market. However, challenges remain, including processing delays and limited permit grants compared to applications.

Spain's government has been inundated with around 900,000 applications from undocumented migrants seeking legal status, significantly exceeding the anticipated 500,000 requests, according to the Migration Ministry. This initiative seeks to integrate these individuals into the formal labor market, highlighting a stark contrast to other European nations closing their borders.

CEAR, a non-profit refugee aid organization, predicts that applications will surpass one million by the deadline in two weeks. Migrants have contributed notably to Spain's economic growth over the past two years, particularly in sectors like hospitality and elderly care, which have faced labor shortages.

The Migration Ministry reported that Spain has issued 360,000 temporary work permits since April, equating to roughly 40% of requests received. Despite the state's capacity to handle up to one million applications between April and June, thousands of migrants face prolonged waits for asylum, often taking years and resulting in over 90% rejection rates.
