Extreme conditions inside Saturn and Jupiter created through world's largest laser
They observed the hydrogen gas sample turn into a transparent liquid and then further under constant pressure became black in color and metallic in appearance. It resembled the aluminum found on earth.
The National Ignition Facility in California, which is the world's most advanced and largest laser is used by researchers and scientists to gain more understanding about Saturn and Jupiter and the physical and chemical conditions existing on them.
The most amazing discovery made about the pressure conditions existing on Saturn and Jupiter was the behavior of hydrogen gas which acted like liquid metal on their surfaces rather than being gaseous. The pressure subjected on the hydrogen is 6 million times more than that of the earth.
Therefore, to gain a wholesome insight on the hydrogen behavior, researchers gathered from California used the world's largest laser to discharge powerful beams of the laser at a hydrogen gas sample so as to create the exact pressure conditions as that on Saturn and Jupiter. They observed the hydrogen gas sample turn into a transparent liquid and then further under constant pressure became black in color and metallic in appearance. It resembled the aluminum found on earth.
This anomalous behavior of hydrogen under extreme pressure is not a new discovery said Dr. Stewart McWilliams of the University of Edinburgh. He and his colleagues have described the entire experimentation in great detail in the journal, Science.
The National Ignition facility aims at creating power sources in our homes besides holding unique experiments of these sorts. Their main goal is to discover fusion reactions against the existing fission ones where the latter creates dangerous waste.
