Another American Moon lander launching next month

After Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines is gearing up to launch its Nova-C lander to the Moon next month. The lunar lander will lift off on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket no earlier than mid-February, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The lunar lander will land near the south pole of the Moon, requiring specific lighting conditions that are only available for a handful of days each month.

The Nova-C lander will transport NASA's science and technology demonstrations to the lunar surface along with other science instruments focusing on plume-surface interactions, space weather/lunar surface interactions, radio astronomy, precision landing technologies, and a communication and navigation node for future autonomous navigation technologies

The Intuitive Machines IM-1 mission will be the Company's first attempted lunar landing as part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative, a key part of NASA's Artemis lunar exploration efforts.

Earlier this month, Astrobotic launched the Peregrine lunar lander to the Moon. Unfortunately, the lander experienced a propulsion issue shortly after the Jan. 8 launch, preventing it from softly landing on the Moon. The lander made a safe, controlled re-entry on Earth over open water in the South Pacific on January 18. This marked the first flight of NASA's commercial lunar delivery service carrying agency science and technology along with other Moon-bound customer payloads.
