Heatwave Tragedy: 32 Monkeys Found Dead in Jharkhand Well

In a tragic manifestation of the ongoing heatwave, 32 wild monkeys were discovered dead in an irrigation well in Jharkhand's Palamu district, officials confirmed on Monday. The incident is suspected to have occurred as the monkeys ventured in search of water amid the relentless high temperatures.

The discovery took place in Sorath village within the Panki block, with authorities still working to confirm the exact date of the event. 'A total of 32 wild monkeys were found dead in an irrigation well in Sorath. The corpses were fished out,' said Medininagar Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kumar Ashish.

The region has been grappling with severe heatwave conditions, seeing temperatures rise to 44-45 degrees Celsius. 'Water sources have almost dried up, pushing wild animals to seek water in villages. These monkeys likely drowned in their desperate attempt to find relief,' Ashish added.

In the same district, three jackals previously died under similar circumstances, and bat deaths have been reported in other Jharkhand districts. Adding to the human toll, four people succumbed to sunstroke last week, with hospitals now setting aside air-conditioned rooms for heatstroke patients.
