Tibetan Lakes Set to Swell, Causing Massive Economic Impact in China

A new study predicts significant swelling of lakes in Tibet due to climate change, potentially leading to massive economic losses for China. By 2100, lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau could expand by over 50%, increasing water volume by over 600 billion tonnes, affecting infrastructure and surrounding countries.

A recent study warns of substantial swelling in Tibetan lakes owing to climate change, which could result in significant economic repercussions for China. International scientists suggest that by the century's end, lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau may expand by over 50%, inundating roads and settlements.

The study, published in Nature Geoscience, estimates that the water volume could surge by more than 600 billion tonnes. This would correspond to a four-fold increase in water storage compared to the last 50 years, threatening infrastructure worth billions of dollars.

Observers highlight the broader regional impact, including on neighboring countries like India. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, known as the 'Water Tower of Asia,' is highly susceptible to climate change, acting as an early warning for global warming's wider effects.
