The court quashed the 2021 decision to relocate a planned sports complex from Navi Mumbai to Mangaon, citing the need to preserve open spaces for future generations.

In a judgment delivered by Justices G S Kulkarni and Jitendra Jain, the court criticized the state for its 'nebulous' approach to sports, which are crucial for the development of both citizens and the nation. The judges underscored the constitutional obligation of a welfare state to encourage youth and children towards sporting activities.

Expressing concerns over the increasing commercialization and 'urban jungles', the court stated that the lack of foresight in planning could lead to a grave injustice to the current and future population. The bench directed the immediate handover of the land back to the government, although the order has been stayed for four weeks pending an appeal.
